Ella

Misty tea hills, hiking trails, and the island's most photographed railway

OVERVIEW

Ella is a small hill-country town surrounded by tea estates, waterfalls, and some of Sri Lanka's best short hikes. It's also home to the Nine Arches Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct that's become one of the most recognisable images of the island.

HISTORY

The area developed around the British-era tea and rail expansion through Sri Lanka's central highlands in the late 19th century — much of the hill country's colonial architecture and rail infrastructure dates from this period.

THINGS TO DO

  • Hike Little Adam's Peak (an easy 1-2 hour walk) or the longer Ella Rock trail
  • Watch a train cross the Nine Arches Bridge
  • Visit a working tea factory and see how Ceylon tea is actually processed
  • Ravana Falls, a short drive outside town

TRAVEL TIPS

  • Evenings get cool at this elevation — bring a light layer even in the tropics
  • The train journey from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the world's great scenic rail routes; book seats a few days ahead in peak season
