OVERVIEW

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife park, known for having one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in the world, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a huge range of birdlife across its mix of scrub jungle, wetlands, and lagoons.

HISTORY

Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and a national park in 1938, Yala is one of the oldest and largest protected areas in Sri Lanka, though only a portion of the park is open to visitors — the rest is a strict nature reserve.

THINGS TO DO

  • Early-morning or late-afternoon jeep safari, when animals are most active
  • Bird-watching around Yala's lagoons and wetlands
  • Combine with a stay near Tissamaharama for easy park access

TRAVEL TIPS

  • The park is sometimes closed for a few weeks in September/October for annual maintenance — worth checking dates before booking
  • Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed — a good local guide and driver make a real difference here
