OVERVIEW

Sitting at nearly 1,900 metres, Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka's coolest major town, ringed by tea plantations and colonial-era buildings that earned it the nickname 'Little England' under British rule.

HISTORY

Developed by the British in the 19th century as a hill station to escape the coastal heat, the town's golf course, racecourse, and Tudor-style buildings are all remnants of that era, alongside the tea industry the British established across the surrounding hills.
