OVERVIEW
Udawalawe National Park is built around a large reservoir and open grassland, home to several hundred wild elephants — sightings here are considerably more consistent than in most other parks, making it a favourite for travelers who want a strong chance of seeing elephants in one visit.
HISTORY
The park was established in 1972 around the Udawalawe Reservoir, built to support irrigation for surrounding farmland; the reservoir itself now anchors the park's ecosystem. A nearby Elephant Transit Home cares for orphaned calves before their release back into the wild.
