Sri Lanka's largest national park, with natural lakes found nowhere else on the island

OVERVIEW

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, known for its 'villus' — natural sand-rimmed lakes unique to the park — and for leopards and sloth bears that draw a quieter crowd than Yala. It reopened to visitors only in the years after the civil war, so it still feels considerably less discovered.

HISTORY

Wilpattu was closed to visitors for much of the civil war and only fully reopened in 2010, which is part of why it remains far less crowded than Yala despite being the country's largest protected wildlife area.

  • Jeep safari through the park's distinctive villu lake system

  • Birdwatching around the villus, especially in the early morning

TRAVEL TIPS

  • A genuinely good alternative to Yala if you'd rather avoid the crowds — sightings can take a bit more patience, but the park itself feels wilder
