Negombo sits just minutes from the international airport, making it the natural first or last stop on almost any Sri Lanka trip. Beyond that convenience, it's a genuinely charming fishing town with a busy fish market, Dutch-era canals, and a relaxed beach strip.

HISTORY

Negombo was fought over by the Portuguese and Dutch for its cinnamon trade, and its many historic churches — earning it the nickname 'Little Rome' — are a legacy of that Portuguese Catholic influence that's stuck around longer here than almost anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
